At the heart of the story

When you visit this iconic site – the site of the Battle of Alesia – you will be transported to the heart of history and gain an understanding of the origins of our civilisation. You’ll learn to distinguish between myth and reality when it comes to the Gauls and the Romans, Vercingetorix and Caesar, and the Battle of Alesia.

You’ll have the opportunity to understand how archaeology enables us to develop and validate hypotheses based on archaeological remains and ancient texts, and how it forms part of a multidisciplinary scientific approach.

Tours to learn about, understand and experience history.

GUIDED TOUR OF THE MUSEUM

At the entrance to the permanent exhibition, the cultural guide opens the doors to the past for you. Travel through the centuries and discover the golden age of the civilisations that once passed through Alésia. The themes intertwine, taking you first into the military world of the Roman legions, then into the gentle rhythm of everyday life among the Gallo-Romans.

The adventure doesn’t end there. The cultural guide will take you outside, where the Roman fortifications stand proudly.

Every step will bring you closer to the past; every word from the cultural guide will make you relive the events as if you were there. Are you ready to embark on this adventure where eras collide and tales of the past come to life?

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

GUIDED TOUR OF THE TEMPORARY EXHIBITION “CAESAR: ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME”

until 29 November

What became of Julius Caesar after his victory at Alesia? With his legions, he continued his policy of conquest in Egypt, Africa and Spain in order to secure absolute power. He defeated his rivals, forged diplomatic alliances and returned triumphant to Rome. Close to the people but betrayed by those closest to him, he met a tragic end. Thanks to prestigious loans (Bologna Museum of Modern Art, the National Museum at the Château de Compiègne, the Nantes Museum of Art, the Dijon Archaeological Museum…) combined with innovative immersive digital experiences, the MuséoParc Alésia brings to life the final years of Caesar’s life and his irresistible rise to power.

During your visit, a cultural guide will take you in the footsteps of Julius Caesar, from the siege of Alesia to his assassination in Rome.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

GUIDED TOUR: “ALÉSIA, FROM CAESAR’S PERSPECTIVE”

The cultural guide will take you on a journey of discovery through Caesar’s legions, first within the permanent exhibition, then amongst the reconstructed fortification lines. This is where the experience really comes to life: thanks to a 360° augmented reality app, you’ll be transported back to 52 BC, right into the heart of a Roman camp.

Legionaries Marcus Pontius Rufus and Titus Flavius Felix explain the construction of the fortifications, the organisation and discipline of the Roman army, and the daily life of soldiers on campaign.

At each stage, simply scan a QR code with your mobile phone to activate the experience and admire the landscape of Alesia as it appeared over two thousand years ago.

Duration: 2 hours

Please note: this activity requires a mobile phone capable of scanning QR codes; these are not provided by the MuséoParc Alésia.

GUIDED TOUR: “ALÉSIA, FROM VERCINGÉTORIX’S PERSPECTIVE”

Guided by a cultural guide, explore the siege of Alesia from the Gauls’ perspective, first through the permanent exhibition, then on the panoramic roof terrace where a unique audio experience awaits you.

The voice of Vercingétorix rings out to recount the siege, the battles and the fierce resistance against Caesar’s legions. A meticulously composed soundscape, developed in collaboration with the film industry, makes the atmosphere of those decisive days almost tangible.

This unique installation immerses you in the daily lives of the besieged Gauls and invites you to imagine how they must have experienced the siege and the wait for help.

You’ll explore the shapes, uses and symbolism of these everyday objects, which were mass-produced in the potters’ workshops of the time.

Then it’s time to get hands-on: using moulds inspired by those used over 2,000 years ago, you’ll make your own oil lamp. You’ll learn the techniques of ancient craftsmen and shape an object that is both functional and beautiful, reflecting Roman craftsmanship.

A hands-on and sensory workshop, combining historical discovery, a craft-based approach and the joy of creating, ideal for groups seeking a lively and original cultural experience.

Guided by a cultural guide, you’ll discover the authentic techniques of ancient mosaic-making: choosing patterns, organising compositions, the role of colours and the precision of the craft. You’ll explore the skills that turned these works into true decorative masterpieces, testaments to Roman refinement.

Then it’s time to get hands-on! You’ll handle the tools and materials used by the artisans, then cut and assemble your own tesserae to create a pattern inspired by antiquity. Each participant takes home their creation, a unique memento of this immersion in Roman art.
